once upon a time

like all little girls, my childhood dreams were filled with fairy tales.  cinderella, sleeping beauty, snow white, rapunzel … beautiful princesses with dreams and hopes abundant. each story was shadowed by evil. stepmothers or jealous witches. beasts or malevolent suitors. yet somehow each ended with the same conclusion of happily ever after. i wanted to be them. i knew someday my prince would come.

once upon a time i wrote my once upon a time. i found my prince. we had our story. it offered no white steed or castle in the sky but my dreams had come true.  but we never found the happily ever after. evil prevailed and i feel jaded. somehow lied to. fooled to believe that love could conquer all. i allowed myself to believe in the fairy tale.

childish naivety. nothing more.
