this week was a bit chaotic. with homecoming over the weekend i knew there would be no chance of getting in a long run on saturday. fridays work day was anticipated to be from 7:30 a.m. until after 9 p.m. and then i had to be at the stadium at 5 a.m. on saturday for setup of our tailgate event. i wasn’t sure if i’d find energy at any other point over the weekend to make up the miles so in spite of a busy week i pushed through my short runs. short runs … ha! it dumbfounds me think that i’ve reached a point in this running adventure that i now refer to 7 mile runs as short. it wasn’t easy to find the time but i managed. as much as i hate running on it, i am thankful to have the home tread. there’s no way i could do this without.

as the weekend neared, i began to see no reason why i couldn’t do my long run on sunday. i had little else to worry about. and the exhaustion from the homecoming activities could be put to rest if i handled the day right. what i didn’t anticipate was not sleeping well thursday night. a mere few hours. friday was a blur of activity ~ a luncheon, reception, photo shoots and parade watch party. by the time my head hit the pillow it was nearly 11 p.m. saturday started at 3 a.m. and was no less hectic. by the time the party was done i knew there was no way i could survive going to the actual game. so i chose to forgo the fun and head home. after a short nap i felt better but found myself doubting my self-discipline. i figured i had one chance to guarantee i wouldn’t simply spend a lazy sunday morning in bed. so before i could change my mind i posted on the club board and made a couple calls and at about 8:30 p.m. i had someone to run with the next morning. no backing out now.

j wanted to try a new run we’ve thought about in the past. we knew very little about it but a rumored 12-mile loop sounded ideal. i had 13 on my schedule so an extra half up and back wouldn’t be an issue. we headed out early and found ourselves in the middle of nowhere at a path no more than 2.1 miles long. we had no idea if there was more. masked by darkness, we could see nothing past the obvious. there was a little hesitation but the itch to run was too strong to ignore and off we went guided only by the lingering moonlight. it was pure chance we came upon the park ranger. he turned us back around and told of the trails on the other side. funny. i’d just emailed a friend the other day asking if he knew of trails. traffic, houses, masses of other running bodies … all were making my run feel like more of a chore than a passion. with my mind in “training mode” i can’t allow myself to lose the love of the run. trails have always been my escape. my world. and here they were before me.

the run was perfect. mostly flat terrain under an arbor of trees. wild boar around many a corner and deer at another. not another runner to be seen and no cars to dodge. even turning on the ipod seemed sacreligious to the sanctity of the land. i ran with j at his pace for most of the run but as the last few miles lay before me i wanted to totally immerse myself in the solitude. i took the pace to a 9-minute mile and left everything ~ life’s stressors, confusion and angst ~  behind. i found my inspiration run.

33 miles and a renewed passion closer to disney.
