i had family in town and it was a bad, bad week. my brother has recently found a passion for cooking and though he and his wife are vegan so it’s relatively healthy eats, i definitely ate too much of it. and when it comes to eating too much, what better way is there than to wash it all down than with glass after glass of pinot noir. and with too much food and too much drink, it’s likely needless to say i got too little sleep. yes, it was a bad week. but it was oh so good. i did get in two short runs with decent times and i can use the argument that i was coming off the half marathon last sunday and needed a little extra downtime, but i felt perfectly lazy all week.

then came saturday and a scheduled 16-mile long run. at this point 16 miles is my max. i did it once about a month and a half ago but that was before the breast cancer 3-day and before my injury. i felt relatively prepared to handle the distance but i was a bit nervous. the weather man was calling for a florida-freezing temp in the low 40s which honestly seemed nothing short of perfect to me. and it seemed as though at least one person in my group was willing and able to keep me company for the entire distance but his pace is faster than mine and i worried he’d get bored and get ahead of the group we were starting with or simply decide breakfast with the rest of them was more enticing than pacing me for the extra miles.

it was definitely cold when we started. and i definitely hurt towards the end. but somehow i not only managed the 16 but did so with average splits around 9:45. having JJ with me was ideal. had it not been for him, i likely would have slowed but i kept the pace strong knowing that he was doing me a favor. of course he swears i did him the favor. he’s training for his first marathon which is a couple months after mine and he was happy to have someone motivate him to do what amounted to his longest run ever ~ even though it was a bit slower than he would have run it on his own. so with two weekends left to increase mileage, it looks as though i have a partner for both. we have 18 on the schedule for next weekend then 20 the following. after that i have little left to do but taper off and hope i’ve built enough base to get me through the 26.2.

oh god, someone please remind me why i’m doing this??????

25 miles and a bundle of nerves closer to disney

h ~ there’s only one person i can blame for this whole running addiction i’ve acquired … you! 🙂 thanks for guiding me, supporting me, pushing me and laughing at me when i said i’d stop after the gasparilla half. if you have a chance pick up this month’s runners world and read the article about long distance running partners. and no, not long distance as in miles run, but long distance as in living miles apart. though you and i have only physically run together once, there still is no one else i’d rather share my running highs and lows with. thank you for everything. xoxo
