to date or not to date

in honor ~ or aversion ~ of the fact that i actually have a date tonight, i am reposting a blog i wrote a couple of years ago on that other space back before i brought my words here. since last time it raised a few flags of concern that i may be a bit off my rocker, let me preface it this time by clarifying that it is a spinoff of hamlet’s famous soliloquy. once again, my most sincere apologies to shakespeare for demolishing his brilliance …

to date or not to date. that is the question.
whether tis easier on the mind and body to suffer
the solitude and loneliness of permanent single life
or to take arms against a sea of suitors
and by accepting end it. to date. to eat.
no more. and by a date to say we end
the heartache and the thousand natural shocks
that flesh is heir to. tis consummation
devoutly to be wished. to date. to eat.
to sleep with. perchance is the dream: ay, there’s the rub,
for in that sleep what pleasures may come
when we have shrugged off the morality,
must give us pause. there’s the self respect
that makes calamity of so long life.
for can she escape the whips and scorns of time,
the pangs of unrequited love, his delay,
the insolence of marriage, and the spurns
that patient merit of th’ unworthy takes,
when she herself might her quietus make
with an emptiness? who can reach.
do we grunt and sweat under a blanket,
with the dread of something after,
discovering each other, far from together.
no traveller returns, puzzle the will,
and makes us rather accept what we have
than hold onto others known lost?
my conscience has made coward of my heart,
and thus my natural instinct
is sicklied o’er with the memories of him,
and every date of great possibility and moment
with this regard their currents turn awry
and lose the name of action. — soft you now,
the fair David! — god, in thy orisons
be all my sins remembered.
