a hard measure

i measure in miles. light weeks i might only do 20. at the height of marathon training closer to mid-forties. but there’s always a number, a simple digit, that defines my week. but without my run i have a problem. there’s no number. i can’t turn around on sunday and easily define my week. it takes a whole lot more to spell out the time on the elliptical, the weights that were lifted or the laps that were swum. and now throw in spinning. i’m confused and i really don’t know if i’m maintaining enough activity or, just as likely possible, over doing it.

the other problem is that i have the worst memory. when running, i had a pretty solid routine. monday hills, tuesday four green, wednesday tempo, thursday speed, friday off, saturday long, sunday recovery. yes i typically only ran five out of those six days and i deviated frequently depending on when sab was home or just for a change of pace, place or face. but all in all i could look back at a week gone by and recount a play by play of miles run.

since it will likely be awhile before i’m back to counting miles. i’ve got to start keeping better track of what i am doing. and this once a week deal isn’t going to cut it because your guess at what i did is almost as good as mine. that said here’s my attempt to recount last week.

sunday ~ spin intro + spin class
monday ~ off (i think)
tuesday ~ 30 mins elliptical (lunch time trip to the gym) + spin (evening trip to the gym)
wednesday ~ gym
thursday ~ off
friday ~ gym ~ ran 1 mile, 2o mins elliptical, upper body wights, abs
saturday ~ off

i can honestly say i have no idea what i did at the gym on wednesday. i know i went. i can only assume it was elliptical related plus weights of some sort. and though it doesn’t really count for much, i’m also trying to get up early to stretch and do ab work in the mornings since core strength is going to be my biggest ally in the fight against my back hip butt thigh … whatever problem.

i’m still taking this one day at a time but it’s time i start remembering what i do each of those days.

You are on the right track! I see you ran a mile- good for you 🙂 in my opinion you are doing plenty of exercise and I bet all of this is gonna make you a much stronger runner for sure.

I think keeping track like you started above will help you realize how much you are maintaining an activity level and keeping your endurance up!

I found in spin some of the instructors have a garmin or other type of device so we know how many miles we did at the end of class, might help to know your mileage?

Keep on keeping on – that mile will be back to double digits soon
