birthday cake and mud pies

this past friday was my birthday. another year older … yes. another year wiser … still up for debate πŸ˜‰ the weekend plans were full. friday night dinner and a hotel in kissimmee. saturday morning the champion’s mud bash. saturday night a local wine bar to celebrate with friends. and sunday recovery. all to be shared with the hunter, the bunny and with any luck the bunny’s boyfriend.

but late thursday night i got a phone call from the bunny to say neither of them would be coming. earlier that day her boyfriend’s brother’s best friend’s 15-year-old daughter had gone missing during an afternoon walk on the beach while vacationing with her family. she wasn’t the type to disobey. top of her class. star soccer player. active in her church. so when she didn’t return they knew something was wrong and mere hours after the phone call to police her body was found in a wooded area a mile or so from their condo. she had been brutally murdered and understandably the news was devastating to the bunny’s bf and his family. all of them close to this beautiful child. the bunny felt she needed to stay home to offer what little comfort one can bring during a tragedy like this and as sad as i was that she wouldn’t be running with me i fully agreed. thankfully by friday afternoon they made an arrest. a 21-year-old who had befriended the girl and her siblings on the beach. but even the relief that he was off the street brings such little consolation or understanding to the evil that exists in our world.

a part of me wanted to cancel. to back out of the run. but i knew the hunter and i could still make it fun so friday we took off after work and after settling into our hotel headed out for my birthday dinner. i don’t like eating out the night before a race ~ nor drinking for that matter ~ but with only 3 miles facing me in the morning i figured kobe steakhouse and a few glasses of wine wouldn’t hurt too bad. ugh! remind me not to do that again. japenese hibachi = too.much.food. not a good feeling on the tummy. but we had fun and true to our not-the-partying-type personalities we were back at the hotel and in bed by 10 p.m. and asleep by midnight.

saturday morning i donned my tutu and prepared for mud. it was HOT! and with a 9:30 a.m. wave time i was regretting the knee socks and black shirt but in spite of my slightly competitive nature i was there to just have fun and i looked forward to the first water or mud i’d find on course. the hunter chose to beat the heat his own way … by being first in line when the beer stand opened at 9 a.m. ~ and yes, i even had a few sips before heading to the start!

the race was fun. not as muddy as i had hoped and to be honest the obstacles were minimal and easy. hay bales to scale. tunnels to crawl through. the best one though was a big water slide down a hill into a nasty pond! FUN! at the risk of revealing my ever-so-secret identity (haha) i have to share a couple pictures.

thankfully the tutu didn't go up in flames!

yes, this was fun to me :)

yes, this was fun to me πŸ™‚

dirty girl

we celebrated my dirty success ~ and 12th place out of nearly 200 women in my age group ~ with a cold beer and post-race entertainment then headed back to the hunter’s house where after a shower to get the stink off i proceeded to pass out cold for a couple hours.

that night i went from a tutu and draft beer to high heels and wine with the hunter and a small group of friends. baked brie. scallops. a delicious australian malbec. and a birthday cake appropriately called the chocolate bomb which was to die for. then after parting ways with the rest, the hunter and i ended the night with a beautiful walk around the little airport across from my house.

as expected sunday was recovery. coffee and crossword puzzles in my favorite arm chair. a few lite household chores. and early to bed as i reflected on another year gone by and what i want to do to make the ones ahead as fulfilling as possible. sadly, it was all too clear to me over the weekend that we never know when the journey could come to an end. so here’s to hoping i not just make it to my next birthday but get there covered in mud, savoring good food and great wine surrounded by amazing friends and maybe, just maybe, with the hunter still by my side.

“life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOO HOO what a ride!”

So terribly sad about the girl. I can’t even process things like this when I hear them.

Happy birthday!! One day when I become a real runner I wanna do a fun race like that…in a costume. Love it.

What a horrible tragedy about that young girl. I don’t know how parents/family move on from that, it just seems so unfair.

But also… HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!! It sounded wonderful and you rocked that tutu πŸ™‚
