the dukes of hazzard-ous running

this past weekend, for the third year in a row, i ran the dances with dirt 50-mile relay. after a little oversight by race officials last year, a simple email yielded a great response and if it wasn’t already going to be, this is surely to remain an annual event on my race calendar!

this year we had a few teammate changes and i knew this crew would be willing and able to step it up a notch on team theme. so after brainstorming for months ~ actually i think we texted back and forth for about five minutes ~ wally and i came up with the perfect team.

the dukes of hazzard-ous running!

roscoe, luke duke, daisy b., uncle jesse and daisy j.

and our team vehicle …

the general jeep!

my dream car!

we even downloaded the dukes of hazzard theme song and the general lee horn and played them throughout the day. i know. we rock!

the race itself is a blast. fifty miles through the woods and swamps of dade city florida. each runner on the team does two legs ranging from around three miles to upwards of seven. there’s risk of getting lost. risk of getting wet. and risk of running into florida wildlife ~ and by that i mean gators! as a trail running junkie, this race is one of my favorites though i was a little bummed given how little rain we’ve had this year. a dry course isn’t nearly as fun as muddy ~ and to a make matters worse it was crazy hot this year ~ but regardless we still had so much fun!

the ironman ~ aka roscoe ~ stayed true to character and ran in costume … well for his first leg. he opted for regular running clothes his second. i can’t imagine a cowboy hat and button-up shirt were fun to run in.

roscoe running!

and wally … well he likes to throw in a little shock factor.

never dare wally to do anything. NEVER!

check out them daisy dukes!

there was simply no way the irongirl and i were running in cowgirl boots and daisy dukes so we opted for regular running clothes.

fraternizing with the competition

but between legs we went back into daisy mode.

uncle jesse always did seem a little on the perverted side

as wally ~ our final runner ~ came into the finish we had the race announcer play the dukes of hazzard theme song and we all hoped on course to run it in as a team.

beers in hand. of course.

no surprise, the same team that wins every year won again. they are fast! so yet again they took home the alligator skull trophies.

how do you think the winners display this trophy at home??

but no surprise, we won best theme again. the race director even had us drive into the winners circle while they played the dukes of hazzard theme song! so yet again, we won comped entry to next year! and i’ll take that over an alligator skull any day!

unfortunately i took home something else that day … a massive case of poison ivy down the backs of my thighs. but it was so worth it and i’ll be back in the swamp again next year.

This race sounds like so much fun, what a great running group you have! I have never been to a race that gives out anything but medals, especially alligator trophies!

Ugh poison ivy is the worst. Oatmeal baths sound weird but really help (and bottles and bottles of calamine lotion).

[…] last year we kicked ass as the dukes of hazzard-ous running so we knew this year was going to have to be huge. at the awards ceremony last year we tossed around a couple theme ideas and one stuck in my head so a few months ago the planning went into gear and the team readied. a last minute need to cancel by gaf left me floundering for a fifth but i don’t think we could have found a better replacement.
