in 2009 i ran the marine corp marathon. it was my second full marathon and to date remains my PR. of course that may have something to do with the fact that i ran marathon number three with food poisoning and number four on 14- hours notice! MCM was a powerful race for me. born and raised in DC the run was a journey through my life i’ll never forget. it’s an experience i likely never can duplicate and one i never expected i would even try to. though i’ve run repeat races before, i always planned to never do the same full more than once. there are just too many i want to run! and though i loved MCM, my running as of late has taken me further from the large-scale race towards the lonely trails of introspection.

the other day i called an emergency bonefish happy hour after an unusually rough monday. the attorney, the drill sergeant, nugget, harry and me. the night started innocent and simple enough. bang bang shrimp and malbec. chit chat and laughter. and then the race director showed up after his track workout. the back and forth banter started. the story about the bet i have with harry that he’ll break his vow to not race the second half of 2013. my fall/winter self-imposed dare to PR every standard race distance. and next thing you knew, after an extra glass or two of wine, both harry and i found ourselves agreeing to be part of the director’s charity team for MCM 2013. seriously this is why i should not drink with runners!

in the grand scheme of things, this race makes perfect sense for me. being from DC, i have plenty of friends who have offered up lodging. an easy charity commitment guarantees me entry to one of the fastest-sellout marathons. it’s the group destination race this year so i will have plenty of support. i planned on a fall marathon anyway. and on far more personal levels, the charity i’m running for is little things for Cancer and almost as satisfying is that this means i win the bet with harry! HA! 😉

in looking back on the last time i ran MCM. and in looking ahead at my PR plans for the fall. and maybe due to a little prodding from the thinker, i decided to up the ante and really redeem myself on my home course! it’s been a long time since the thought of attempting to boston qualify has crossed my mind. doing augusta and now working toward an ultra. speed has been a back burner ambition. but everything points to this being where i need to try. a fast, familiar course. an already determined mindset to PR. friends. harry.

a BQ means shaving more than 30 minutes off my PR. 30:11 to be exact! that’s a huge margin but one i think i can achieve. i need to get through the 50. give my body a little downtime (my foot has not been feeling great the last few days) and then kick it up.

i’m not going to post my fund raising page in here. it’s too identity revealing. but if you want to donate to little things for Cancer, please comment with an email address and i’ll send you the link. in keeping with my BQ goal i’m asking for anyone who wants to support me to donate $30.11 but any amount is appreciated … less or more!
