a little bit mental

i’ve been a little quiet on the running front. truth is i haven’t run a mile in 10 days. after my 40-mile weekend i had some slight knee pain. nothing that kept me down but the next weekend, in the beginning stage of taper, i did a mere (semi) long of 17 and found myself in pretty major discomfort after. the only way i could describe the pain was almost as though the inner edge of my knee cap felt bruised. seemed a pretty typical runners knee symptom and given the intense agony i found in pushing on the lower connector of the ITB i figured it to be the culprit that was throwing off my patellar tracking. i scheduled a massage for later that day and found some relief  but not enough to feel ok attempting miles. so i made the rash extreme intelligent decision to turn taper into recovery and do nothing but rest.

i’m now three days out from croom and i’m going in on little more than a wing and a prayer. i have no idea if my knee will hold for five miles nonetheless the 50 i’m attempting. but i’ve heard it claimed that ultrarunning is 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical and lord knows i’m certainly a little mental 😉 i don’t care if i qualify for western states ~ a sub-11 hour requirement. i don’t care if i’m the last runner in. i just want to finish. preferably on my feet!
